China Finance 40 Forum (CF40), the Euro 50 Group and the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) jointly held a seminar themed Coping with the Return of Inflation on July 1, 2022.
The event commenced with opening remarks from Edmond Alphandéry, Chairman of the Euro 50 Group, Wang Haiming, Secretary-General of CF40, and Adam Posen, President of PIIE, followed by a debate among four former central bankers on the causes and consequences of inflation.
The rest of the conference featured two sessions. Session I dealt with the return of inflation which was unexpected not so long ago when the risk of deflation was the major concern. Panelists explored the reasons driving this shift such as the energy crisis and the exit from Covid control policies, and its direct and indirect impacts on trade, capital flows and exchange rates among other dynamics especially in emerging market economies.
Session II navigated the various issues raised by the return of inflation and potential coping strategies to address its implications for major economies around the world.
This trilateral dialogue series started in 2015 and takes place on an annual basis. By pooling wisdom of leading figures in the global economic and financial community, it seeks to promote candid and in-depth exchange on the most relevant economic issues and contribute to well-informed policymaking.
