On July 20, 2021, CF40 and PIIE held the 3rd Young Economists Forum on the topic of Demographic Challenges in China and Beyond.
The seminar started with keynote speeches by Du Yang (CF40 Invited Member; Deputy Director, Institute of Population and Labor Economics, CASS) and Jacob Kirkegaard (PIIE Nonresident Senior; Senior Fellow, German Marshall Fund of the United States). Based on the newly released information from the seventh census, Du presented an analysis of China’s demographic trend and its challenges to economic development. Kirkegaard then discussed the difficulties in reversing China's declining total fertility rate (TFR) and provided policy proposals.
Cai Fang (Member of CF40 Academic Committee; Chief Expert of National Think Tank, CASS) and Nicholas Lardy (PIIE Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow) made commentary remarks on the speeches.
The seminar was moderated by PIIE Senior Fellow Mary Lovely.
