The China Finance 40 Forum (CF40) and the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) held the Third China Economic Forum on January 11, 2018 in Washington DC. The theme was "The New Era of Chinese Economy and China’s Financial Opening". Leading economists from China and the US attended the conference to discuss the Chinese economy and bilateral economic relations.
The Forum consisted of four sessions each themed "Interpreting the 'New Era' of Chinese Economy", "Chinese Monetary Policy and Global Financial Cooperation", "2017 Jingshan Report on China's Financial Opening" and "Outlook for Sino-US Economic Relations".
During the week preceding the conference, a CF40 delegation led by Secretary-General Wang Haiming paid visits to think tanks, government agencies, and international organizations in DC including the US Treasury, Department of Commerce, Office of the US Trade Representative, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, Institute of International Finance, Truman Foundation, Wilson Center, Heritage Foundation, Urban Institute, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Center for American Progress, the Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, Council on Foreign Relations, Hoover Institute, as well as Cato Institute. At the meetings, CF40 experts exchanged views with US officials and scholars on prospects of the two economies and bilateral economic relations. At the think tanks, CF40 management discussed with their US counterparts the environment and development prospects of US think tanks under the Trump administration.
In a later report, CF40 signaled an early warning to the upcoming Sino-US trade conflict, which was highly valued by policymakers.
