The China Finance 40 Forum and the Peterson Institute for International Economies held the second China-US Economists Symposium and a series of exchange activities in Beijing and Shanghai from 8 to 13 April, 2013.
The two-day symposium was held in Beijing on 12 and 13 April. The topics discussed include: fiscal sustainability of China and the United States; regional trade agreements and bilateral trade; global imbalances, exchange rates, and policy responses from developed and developing countries; evolution of the economic structure of China and the United States; and China's shadow banking and US experiences.
Afterwards, the PIIE delegation visited several government departments and financial agencies including the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) and its Shanghai Bureau, the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, and met with then PBOC Governor Zhou Xiaochuan, CBRC Vice Chairman Chen Wenhui and Director-General of CBRC Shanghai Bureau Liao Min. Chinese and American experts shared views on monetary policy and quantitative easing, regulation of the banking system, development of China's insurance sector, among other issues.
As part of the exchange program, CF40 and PIIE also held a luncheon meeting themed "Promoting Market-based Interest Rate Reform and Maintaining China's Economic Growth".
